The Dakhká Khwáan Dancers + DASH present Raven Strut

First single off their forthcoming album, Deconstruct/Reconstruct

The Dakhká Khwáan Dancers, a Yukon First Nations dance group, has teamed up with electronic music producer DJ DASH for their debut album, Deconstruct/Reconstruct, to be released on Nov. 24. In advance of the album release comes their first single, “Raven Strut,” originally composed by Kevin Clevenger, a Tsimshian from the Pacific Northwest Coast, in Alaska.

“Raven Strut” is in memory of Clevenger’s two-year-old nephew, who passed away. Much like the confidence and attitude exuded by coastal ravens, his nephew used to strut around the household.

The Dakhká Khwáan Dancers added a Tlingit twist to the song and DASH remixed it to create a rhythm of electronic beats that merge infectiously with traditional style drumming. Raven sounds have also been added to the track to honour the song’s connection to the familiar bird of the North. The single’s cover art features a raven mask carving by the late William Callaghan, an artist of Tlingit ancestry from the Yukon.

This “Raven Strut” remix is the first collaborative effort between the Dakhká Khwáan Dancers and DASH, thus a perfect teaser for their forthcoming album.
